Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April. Since fall of 2007, the Hudson River Estuary Program’s “Trees for Tribs” initiative has been responsible for planting 62,200 feet of stream buffers along the Estuary’s tributaries with 24,000 native trees and shrubs. Phone: 212-682-5272

Event Description: Every Year MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) provides a free week long summer camp program for kids with neuromuscular diseases. Every year students, from multiple academic disciplines volunteer and gain valuable, practical experience in their fields of study by packing their bags and spending a week in a unique camp setting as volunteer counselors. Counselors are paired with a young person between the ages of 6 - 17 with a neuromuscular disease and are responsible for the youngster's safety and care, while helping to foster the child's independence during his/her rare time away from home. It is a one-week, sleep-away camp, and is held each annually in an accessible environment. The MDA rents a campsite located in Spring Valley, Rockland County, which, during the rest of the year, serves people who, are blind or visually impaired. It features a guide rail system and adapted facilities that provide barrier-free access to various activities. Counselors participate with their youngsters in all activities, from arts-and-crafts to swimming and sports. Campers attend MDA summer camp at no cost, and volunteer counselors receive no pay. Counselors receive an intensive day-and-a-half training session and, for one week, they ensure that the youngsters under their care are well fed, take any required medications on schedule, receive proper exercise and rest, and maintain good daily hygiene. Because of the increase in campers MDA Summer Camp 2012 is one session and the dates are as follows: Saturday, July 7 to Friday, July 13, 2012. I have attached a flier that you could post to encourage participation in our camp. Please let me know if you would like to discuss introducing this volunteer opportunity to students in your program. I can address any preliminary questions, and if you wish to explore the idea further. For a glimpse of what volunteering as an MDA camp counselor is about, please visit: www.mda.org/clinics/camp/volunteer.html
